#Born2Coach Story - Steve Spurrier
As part of UK Coaching Week, we will be sharing a few stories on the fantastic work our club coaches engage in, as well as encouraging more people to get into coaching. First up is our Under 14s coach (and club chairman) Steve Spurrier! Steve joined the club as a parent and his role has continued to grow over the years, now we don’t know what we would do without him!
What does great coaching mean to you?
I strongly believe that it should be about the player and not the coach. The coaches job is to guide the player to seek and find answers to aid their own development. Within this it is important to see the person and not just the player and understand you can guide them as a positive role model, I think we can impact how young people are on and off the court

How has coaching helped you?
Coaching has allowed me to utilise the communication skills that I have learned over many years in my work in new and different environments. I have also developed my reflection skills, considering how well I communicate with others, recognising different approaches are needed with a variety of individuals. I have particularly focused on how to individualise this for the player/ person.
What are the next steps for you and your development?
Getting into coaching later and not having played to a high level means its a pretty steep learning curve at times! However, there is so much information and content available for you to up skill and improve and I love being able to dive into this to help myself improve. For example, I have just undertaken the UK Coaching Duty of Care badge.
I will continue on my learning curve by using all the tools out there and I hope to be able to go to a face to face coaching clinic soon and be able to interact with others!
Finally, my intention next is to undertake the BE Level 3 coaching course so I can validate the work I have put in over the last few years.
